Teaching Modal Verbs and Expressions through the Flipped Classroom Model: A Video & Interactive Exercise Project

My friend Yiğit Gökay (click here to visit Yiğit's blog) and I created a video and an interactive exercise to be used for a flipped classroom as an assignment. Before I share our video and explain how we created the video and exercise, I'm going to share some information about the flipped classroom model.

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary blended learning is "a way of studying a subject that combines being taught in class with the use of different technologies, including learning over the internet". The flipped classroom is a blended learning model in which students learn topics at home and practice in the classroom with the guidance of a teacher. It's probably the most suitable approach for learning and teaching if students have access to the internet and technology. Why? Because students can use different online resources such as videos, articles, and e-books according to their learning styles at their own pace to learn any subject. Moreover, teachers, rather than parents, can provide students with assistance on projects or tasks.

As for our assignment, we created a video and an interactive exercise to teach some modal verbs and expressions. I used Canva, which is an online graphic design platform, to create the video and my partner used Wordwall, which is an online platform that allows teachers to create and share interactive activities, to create the interactive exercise. While creating the video, for the grammar descriptions, I used the English File pre-intermediate coursebook as the reference source. For the visuals, I usually utilized illustrations that I found on Canva but when I couldn't find something that I wanted, then I used an AI tool called DALL-E to create some visuals.  Since I created the video for low-level English learners, I narrated the topic slowly in the video. That's why listening to the video can be boring for an advanced learner, but they can easily increase the speed of the video.

You can watch the video below and click here to do the exercise. I hope you like them.
